About our Malawi Hibiscus

This hibiscus rosellla grows wild on the Chongoni Mountains watershed in Malawi. Three different villages have come together to build watershed resilience on the side of the mountains to stop the increase in flooding due to deforestation. They have created a green corridor at the base of the mountains with key indigenous trees, giant bamboo, wildflowers, indigenous starch roots, and swale ridges. The communities have achieved positive impact for their farms and villages by working together and working with nature.

The hibiscus rosella is one of the key wildflowers that grow in this area. With much more resilience when self-seeded as opposed to planted. The hibiscus is harvested traditionally by the women in the dry season. Your purchase supports these women in Chongoni, Malawi as we source directly from them.
